What does Yahweh compare to a small rudder that moves a great ship? Or a bit in the mouth of a horse that makes it obey us? Or a small spark that starts a great forest fire? The answer is our tongue.

Yahweh says in James 3:3-12 that our tongue is a very small part of our body, but with it we can praise Yahweh or we can curse man who is made in Yahweh’s image.

Yahweh gave us our tongue so we can talk. The mouth of the righteous man utters wisdom and his tongue speaks what is right, Psalms 37:30. We may praise Yahweh with our tongue. My tongue will sing of your righteousness. O Yahweh open my lips and my mouth will declare your praise, Psalms 51:14.

Sometimes we don’t always do what is right and we say things we shouldn’t, but Yahweh is very strict about the words that come out of our mouth. He tells us to keep our tongue from evil and our lips from telling lies, Psalms 34:13. Yahweh hates it when we lie, Proverbs 12:22. Sometimes if we can’t think of anything good or nice to say it is best not to say anything at all. When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise, Proverbs 10:19.

James 1:26 talks about how we cannot say that we believe in Yahweh and not keep a tight reign on our tongue. If we do, our religion is worthless. That is a pretty serious thing! We need to keep our speech pure so we can say we believe in Yahweh and others can look at us and see that we are living a good life for Yahweh.

The bible says that you can set an example for others. Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith, and in purity, 1 Tim 4:12.
